Recently, I saw a post on Mindy Kaling's Instagram about which ice cream is the best. She had pints of Halo Top, McConnell's, and Bennett's along with some other brands. When I saw this post, I started to realize that I never really thought about my favorite ice cream. But then, coincidentally, I remembered the best ice cream I've ever had.
Strawberry Buttermilk from Jeni's.
Now, you might think I'm crazy (I am) when you realize that I'm writing a post about one flavor of ice cream (I am). But lemme tell you, no ice cream I'll ever have will be better than this flavor. Before I start telling you about this heavenly favor (remember, just my opinion ;)) lemme break down what the flavor actually is. There's obviously a strawberry aspect to it, but what the hell does the buttermilk do. The science-y answer? It adds tartness to the cream and since it's just straight up dairy, it makes the mixture thicker and sweeter. The normal answer? It tastes better. So basically, it's just a creamier and sweeter version of the original strawberry flavor. It might seem simple, but trust me, there's a ridiculous amount of smart science-y stuff behind it. The acidity of the strawberry is perfectly balanced with the heavy cream and the sweet buttermilk. This balance creates a near-perfect taste in your mouth and makes you crave more. (figured out why I like this a lot yet?)
I've loved this flavor for about 2 years now, but that's because you can't just buy this flavore whenever you want. It's a summer-exclusive flavor. (any flavor with the word "exclusive" scares me) That means in the 2 years I've basically worshipped this flavor, I've only eaten it about 15 times. Sad, I know, but MAN is it a good way to avoid ice cream for the rest of the year. You might be thinking, "Niyam, just buy the fricking pints and eat it in the fall." I've tried that buddy, but the ice cream gets freezer-burned really quickly. And it's not one of those ice creams that still taste good after getting freezer-burned either. So yeah, I recommend just going to an actual Jeni's store. There's a couple around Chicago, and I think one is in Oakbrook but I don't know for sure. I also recommend going to the actual store to try some of their cones. Their cones aren't just normal, they're salted. That might seem really simple and it looks like it might not make a difference, but it makes the ice cream taste so much better. (ESPECIALLY Strawberry Buttermilk)
So there's your generic ice cream post.
